American Names

The New Top 10 Most Popular Baby Names in America

It’s May 12th, 2023, the last Friday before Mothers’ Day. That means the Social Security Administration has just released its eagerly anticipated list of the most popular baby names in the United States of America! Excepting a COVID-related delay in 2020, SSA traditionally publishes the previous year’s baby name data for the entire country each May, going all the way down to just 5 recorded uses. Now, a name given to 5 babies is incredibly unique the 21st century, considering that the names that rank in the Top 10 (i.e., Emma, James, etc.) are currently given to anywhere between 9,000 and 21,000 babies. Those names, the most popular names in the U.S., are the names we’re going to talk about now.

Here were the Top 10 baby names given to American boys in 2022:

  1. Liam
  2. Noah
  3. Oliver
  4. James
  5. Elijah
  6. William
  7. Henry
  8. Lucas
  9. Benjamin
  10. Theodore

And here are the top 10 baby names given to American girls in 2022:

  1. Olivia
  2. Emma
  3. Charlotte
  4. Amelia
  5. Sophia
  6. Isabella
  7. Ava
  8. Mia
  9. Evelyn
  10. Luna

Luna was the only entry, which meant that there was only one exit. In this case, as predicted, it overtook Harper. Harper now ranks #11 and is likely to continue falling now that it’s evidently past peak.

What kind of surprises are there with the 2022 Top 10? For me, the biggest surprise is just how stable it is. The top 3 names for both boys and girls didn’t move rankings at all. Liam, Noah, and Oliver are still the top 3 boys’ names, and the same goes for Olivia, Emma, and Charlotte on the girls’ side. In fact, for the girls’, the #4 name also remained the same: Amelia. The biggest change positive change within the top 10 (other than Luna’s ascendancy) was Henry rising from #9 to #7. Ava and Benjamin both dropped two spots, giving Isabella, Sophia, and Henry boosts. And James replaced Elijah in the top 4, though it carried that rank several years ago so that isn’t really a big deal.

How did my predictions match up? I was correct that Liam and Olivia would remain the top names, and as I previously mentioned here, I correctly assumed Luna would reach the top 10. I was also right about Harper likely falling out. However, I was wrong about Jack’s possible entry, though; Jack not only didn’t reach the top 10, it fell from #11 to #15. Nothing left the boys’ top 10, which meant nothing could replace it. If Benjamin weren’t such a classic, we could have easily seen Mateo reach the top 10 this year (Mateo and Levi were *so* close). More remote possibilities I eyed (Jackson and Gianna, namely) dropped significantly, so I think their top 10 chances are gone.

And for one final bit of fun, here are a couple of comparison charts showing the top 10 names for the last 5 years. Let’s start with the boys:

Wow, I think the boys’ names have changed more in the last 5 years than the girls’ names…at least at the top!

What do you think? Do you have a child whose name is in the top 10, or maybe are you considering a top 10? Are you worried certain names are getting too popular? As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Name Profile: Florian

Here’s a name that should be on your radar: Florian.

Florian comes from Florianus, the name of a short-lived Roman emperor who reigned in 276 C.E. More famously, his contemporary St. Florian is the patron saint of Upper Austria, Poland, and firefighters.

Florian fits into so many categories that are trendy for U.S. baby names in 2023:

  • International: Probably in part thanks to St. Florian, it’s a popular choice for baby boys in Austria, Poland, and Germany. If you love imports like Luca, Florian should be next on your list.
  • Nature / Floral: Florian ultimately derives from Florus, a Roman men’s name which comes from the same root as Flora (a goddess representing flowers and the Spring). Florian is one of only a handful of boys’ names that’s strongly associated with flowers! It works well if you want to honor a Flora or Florence, so I think we can add it to another category: men’s names that honor women. And if you like positive associations, besides the floral aspects names like Florence and Florian often take on an additional, related meaning: “flourishing.”
  • Vintage: Besides originating in the Roman era, Florian was briefly popular in the early 20th century United States. According to data from the Social Security Administration, its highest-ever rank was #525 in 1917. Florian’s been out of the top 1000 since 1941, though you can still usually find a few born each year.
  • “-N” ending: Think Nolan, Owen, Jackson, and other boys’ names ending with the letter N that are sweeping today’s playgrounds.
  • Soft boy names: Gentle, rounded, vowel-heavy boys’ names like Liam and Rowan are all the rage right now. Nameberry actually included Florian in their post on the trend.
  • Unique: Less than 50 babies per year in the U.S. are being named Florian! At last count in 2021, just 29 boys were named Florian across the country.

Florian also appears across pop culture throughout the past 50 years!

  • Pokemon: Florian is the main male character of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet (Juliana is his female counterpart). The games released in 2022, so maybe we should expect an uptick in the next data release!
  • Dido: The singer Dido’s real first name is Florian, giving us an unusual example of a woman Florian.
  • Kraftwerk: Music fans may also recall Florian Schneider, a core and original member of German electronic band Kraftwerk. If you think you’ve never heard Kraftwerk’s music, you’re likely wrong; the Coldplay song “Talk” samples Kraftwerk’s “Computer Love.”
  • Harry Potter: Florean Fortescue (yes, different spelling) was the owner of a popular ice cream parlor in Diagon Alley. Although he was a minor character, the books were the first place I ever encountered the name.
  • Attack on Titan: The manga contains a character named Florian. While I suspect anime has much wider-reaching effects than manga on U.S. baby naming, this is a popular series and I won’t be surprised if someone finds inspiration here.

Ryan, Ian, and Ori are probably the most accessible nicknames, though Florri is cool because it sounds like a Viking or a dwarf in a Tolkien novel! Florian is also an isogram, which means it has no repeating letters.

What do you think about the name Florian? Would you use it? Do you prefer it as a men’s name or think it’s more gender-neutral? Let me know!

225+ Isogram Names Starting with ‘J’

Do you enjoy playing name games? It’s lots of fun to pick a few favorite monikers from a list and name an imaginary baby or family, but something else that’s wildly entertaining is determining how many names you can find containing certain letters, under a particular length, or other restricting parameters. One name game I especially love is to think up possible isograms!

Isograms are (usually) names or words that don’t repeat any letters. They are simultaneously easy and hard to find; easy, in that you can easily imagine a few, but hard in that you can’t contemplate the sheer number of isogrammic names that exist. Yet, the many thousands of isogrammic names comprise only a small total of all the possible names Americans name their babies each year, let alone humans on an international or historic scope.

Here is a list of more than 225 isogram names starting with ‘J!’ Most of them come from recent U.S. baby name data, so there’s always the chance you could run into one!

I wonder how many children named “Jr” are called “JR” like the initials or “Junior.” And on that topic…why some children are named “Junior” instead of “(Parent’s Name), Jr.” It’s an interesting phenomenon, to be sure.

Do you have a favorite isogram name that starts with ‘J?’ Are there any you would add to this list? Let me know!

300+ Isogram Names Starting with ‘G,’ ‘H,’ and ‘I’

Do you enjoy word games or name games? Do you find yourself rearranging letters in your head? Are you looking for a unique baby name? If you answered yes to any of those questions, isograms might be for you. Isograms are (usually) a type of word or name with no repeating letters. There are thousands of isogram names out there, but it can be hard to formulate more than a few on one’s own. That’s why I’m bringing them to you! In this post series, I curate lists of isogram baby names from recent U.S. birth data and a handful of other sources to cast a wide net and discover some really intriguing choices. Some initials are more prone to creating isograms than others, and some initials more popular to begin with; because relatively few baby names begin with the initials ‘G’, ‘H’, and ‘I,’ I’ve combined those isograms together into a single post!

250+ Isogram Names Starting with ‘D’

Have you been following along with my lists of isogram names? I recently began a series listing hundreds of names with no repeating letters. You’d think that’s a lot, but when the U.S. records well over 10,000 baby names per year for baby boys and baby girls each, a couple hundred is absolutely nothing. That’s not even including many trendy spelling variations – I’m generally looking for unique, distinct isogrammic baby names when I create these lists.

Isograms are a great way to play with the bounds of the English language. So many words and names repeat at least one letter that you truly have to go looking for them. Oftentimes, they hide in plain sight! Anyway, here are over 250 isogram names starting with ‘D.’ Most (but not all) of these made the list after I scoured the Social Security Administration baby name data for examples.

All in all, there are some absolutely fascinating names that count as isograms. Deucalion tickles me because it not only doesn’t repeat any letters, but it also includes all five main English-language vowels: AEIOU. Can you believe 6 baby boys received that name in 2021? I somehow can *and* can’t. All I can say is that Greek Mythology provides a lot of baby name inspiration nowadays.

Do you have any favorite isogram baby names starting with ‘D?’ I’d love to know your thoughts, and if you come up with any that aren’t on this list, let me know! Discussion is a key goal of this blog.
